Consider the denominations of our coins. The decimal currency system makes it logical to expect Cents, Dimes, and Dollars. The United States expanded this to include Half Cent, Half Dime, and Half Dollar. Clearly we didn't stick to these coins, the Half Cent disappeared and we also minted a few coins that deviated from this theme… the Quarter Dollar for example. But there were also others… including the Twenty Cent, the Three Cent , and the Two Cent.
In a Dec. 8, 1863 letter Mint Director James Pollock recommended to the Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase that a two cent coin be introduced. Though there had been some earlier attempts at introducing the coin as early as 1806 those earlier attempts had failed. The proposal for the coin was included in the Mint Bill passed by Congress April 22, 1864. Ultimately the coin was not widely accepted by the public and was only minted from 1864 to 1873.
It's interesting to note, especially on the heals of all the bickering about the placement of "In God We Trust" on the presidential dollars, that the two cent coin was the first to bear the motto.
