To start, I wasn't all that (read: at all) impressed with yesterdays collection of change. I sifted through the coins and picked out a year/denomination that I had not previously used as coin of the day and, still unimpressed, started prepping the daily post. And then I looked up the value as listed in the 'Red Book'. OK… when did a '91 quarter increase so much in value? I mean seriously! I remember 1991! And it doesn’t' feel like it was THAT long ago. Circulation strike coins from my own life time just shouldn't, even at MS-65, appreciate in value 4800%. Granted, we're talking about high grade examples here, as apposed to the coin I pulled out of my change, but even so… If I had been in a coin shop, and drinking chocolate milk, and saw a 1991-D quarter for sale for $12 I would have been likely to spray milky chocolaty goodness right through my nose. Fortunately I encountered the 'value' in the Red Book and wasn't actually in a coin shop where such an incident might be embarrassing. That, and I wasn't drinking chocolate milk, so the potential nasal disaster was nicely avoided.
