German States Prussia 1/6 Thaler 1822 to 1840Well, Mark, that's a cool coin. It is a 1/6th thaler from the old German State of Prussia. In worn condition the catalogs report a value of $8. In average circulated condition, like our example in the picture, the value moves up to $20. A fully uncirculated coin, if you can find one, catalogs over $200.

Be sure to understand how to interpret these catalog values. Use our Important Terminology page via the link at the upper left.

Canada 50 Cents 1870 to DateSome of the very old Canadian 50 cent pieces are worth quite a bit of money. Coins dated before 1936 generally carry a substantial numismatic (coin collector) premium over and above face value of the coin. Modern coins, like the one in our secondary picture with King George VI, are worth face value: 50 cents in Canada.

Here are approximate catalog values for *common date* coins dated before 1936:

worn condition: $10 to $50 US dollars, older more valuable
average circulated: $30 to $100
well preserved: $200 to $500

These are catalog values for undamaged coins. To understand these values, use our Important Terminology page (link at upper left). Cavescott's coin is apparently damaged, so its value goes down to almost zero. It sounds like this specimen had a hold drilled through it and the hole was later filled with some type of material

Now there are also several *better data* Canadian 50 cent pieces that catalog above the *common date* prices above. These are listed below. The value shown is for average circulated coins. More wear means less value. Less wear means more value.

1870: $2500
1890H: $3000
1894: $1500
1905: $700

France Indo China Piastre 1946 and 1947French Indo China (Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia today) produced these 1 piastre coins in copper-nickel during 1946 and 1947. Coins without a reeded edge are more valuable than coins with a reeded edge. Here are catalog values in US dollars:

Edge not reeded: $15 worn, $200 fully uncirculated
Reeded edge: $1 worn, $10 fully uncirculated

Belgium 1, 2, 5, and 10 Centimes 1811 to 1919This is an interesting series of copper coins, Peter. I like the design, it certainly is an eye-catcher. The four denominatios addressed on this page have all the same lion, tablets, ribbons, and crown pattern, but their sizes and dates of issue are different. The values range from a few US dollars to a several 100 US dollars, and even over $1000 for well preserved coins. But, since your coin has a hole in it, the value goes way down, to one-tenth the values quoted below.

Sizes appear first, then values.

Centime: 17 mm diameter, 1832 to 1863
2 Centimes: 22 mm diameter, 1832 to 1909
5 Centimes: 28 mm diameter, 1811 to 1861
10 Centimes: 33 mm diameter, 1832 to 1856

Most of the dates in the series are what are known as *common dates*. There are a few *better dates*, but most coins are common. There are also quite a few *special minting varieties* of these coins, but such variations are beyond the ken of CoinQuest. If you have one or more of these coins in good shape, i.e., with only a little wear and no scratches, stains, spots and the like, it might be worth searching out a coin dealer or knowledgable collector to get an accurate, first-hand appraisal.

DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.

Below you will find the common date catalog value for each denomination. After that, we list the better and key date values. All values are catalog values for undamaged coins. Use the Important Terminology page (link at upper left) to understand how to interpret 'catalog value.'
